Living On (Or Near To) Savile Row

When looking to buy a flat in central London, some home buyers are keen to buy near some of the world’s best streets for shopping.

Savile Row fits this bill and is the world’s most famous and most revered suit and tailoring street in the world.

Savile Row is a street in Mayfair, London and is where the term ‘bespoke’ was born, which means to cut and make a suit that is ‘bespoke’ to the individual.

The dinner jacket, or tuxedo as it is also known, was created by Henry Poole & Co.

There are mixed feelings about how the term ‘tuxedo’ came about…

The first is that the founders of the Tuxedo Club, (Astor, Goelet, Lorillard and Mills) were regular Henry Poole & Co customers in the 1860’s, which is when the Prince of Wales (King Edward VII) ordered his first dinner jacket (tuxedo!)...

The thought behind the first theory is that Astor, Goelet, Lorillard and Mills copied the Prince of Wales and wore their dinner jackets amongst New York high society and thus called their clubhouse the Tuxedo Club upon opening it.

The second theory is that the Prince of Wales met with James Potter and his wife and they were duly invited to Sandringham.

Potter asked the tailor of the Prince of Wales (Henry Poole & Co) what would be appropriate to wear at an informal royal event and Henry Poole & Co recommended a ‘short celestial blue evening coat’.

James Potter ordered the coat from the tailor, which was made to perfection, and wore it on his return to New York and he introduced it to the New York high society scene in the Tuxedo Club.

Whatever theory is true, it is clear that the dinner jacket/ tuxedo was born at Henry Poole & Co.

Famous clients of Savile Row have included the Prince of Wales/ Kind Edward VII, the Duke of Cambridge, Winston Churchill, Napoleon III and Lord Nelson, amongst many, many other famous names and faces.

Fictional character James Bond even bought his suits from Savile Row!

Modern day Savile Row has a range of tailors, from bespoke tailors, to tailors who also provide off-the-rack solutions (as well as bespoke tailoring) such as Gieves & Hawkes.
