Pros & Cons Of Living On Each Floor In An Apartment Building

Pros and Cons of Living on Each Floor

What are some of the pros and cons of living on the lower floors, middle floors and top floors in an apartment building?

Lower Floors

Pros

  • No Neighbours Beneath You – This means that you won’t have to worry about making too much noise, as there’s no-one beneath you!

  • Lower Priced – Generally speaking, apartments on the lower floors are typically the most affordable. What you make up for in terms of a lack of views, you end up paying less for your apartment.

  • Private Outdoor Space – apartments on the lower ground floors (often referred to as ‘basement flats’ or ‘garden flats’), usually come with private outdoor space.

Cons

  • Theft – Unfortunately, living in an apartment on the ground or lower-ground floor, means that you are far more susceptible to theft and people trying to break in to your property.

  • Cost Of Heating – Your costs of heating will more than likely be higher than higher floors.

  • Lack Of Views – There will obviously be a lack of a view, unless your property opens out onto, say, a river view.

  • Traffic Noise – You will more than likely hear traffic throughout busy hours in the day.

Middle Floors

Pros

  • Less Traffic Noise – You’ll have much less exposure to traffic noise than a ground-floor or lower-ground floor apartment.

  • Some Views – If you are in a property situated in the middle of a block of flats, you will have better views than on the ground or lower-ground floors.

  • Good Access – Even in a walk up apartment, you’re not too far from the ground level, which means that you can easily live your normal day-to-day life. You couldn’t do this in a top floor walk-up apartment!

Cons

  • Lots Of Neighbours – You have neighbours everywhere - next to you, below you and above you!

  • Noise Levels Due to a large number of neighbours, you will probably have a fairly high amount of noise throughout both the day and night.

  • Heating Bills – Your heating bills will likely be less than those on the lower ground floors.

Higher Floors

Pros

  • Low Theft – The chances of theft or a break-in are incredibly low on higher floors.

  • Quieter – Living on the top floor(s) means that you have no-one living above you, so you can live in a much quieter apartment.

  • Heating Costs – apartments on higher floors, have a higher temperature than those below, purely because heat rises. Therefore, your heating costs should be significantly lower than those on the lower-ground floors and possible even the middle floors.

  • Best Views – Higher floors simply mean higher views, which usually means better views.

Cons

  • More Expensive – Top floor apartments typically cost significantly more than apartments on the middle floors and lower floors.

  • Poor Access – In a walk up apartment, the accessibility is dreadful. You will have to walk up a number of flights of stairs to reach your apartment.
